Daylight seeps black
Clock chimes-next routine
Cup of calm and honey brewed
Heartbeat increase-time for race
Mental noose in place
Devil gnaws at his leash
Twilight scratches face
Sleep has been slain and dreams weep
I remain awake
Today’s NaPoWriMo challenge was inspired by the theme of Pain and Sleep as a prompt on Magaly Guerrero‘s blog. I chose to use a set of three senryu, a form similar to haiku that conveys human experience and emotion.
Here is her prompt:
Imagine the ache, I just spoke of, twisting its fatigue around your muscles and squeezing your bones all the time… at different levels of intensity… while you are trying to fall asleep… Keeping this horrid bit in mind, for NaPoWriMo with Magaly Guerrero 2015, Day 23, I’m inviting you to picture what living this way might be like, then Write a poem that explores the intricate relationship between pain and sleep.
“Insomnia” is Original Art by Audrey Schwartz Rivers
I like how you build this feeling of being trapped, both in a cycle and in a metaphorical noose. The inevitability of being trapped awake is very well conveyed.
