Redefining Disability Day 6: Daily Living and Disability

Are your activities of daily living affected by disability? If you’re comfortable, share a little of your daily routine.

Honestly, some days are better than others. I’ve been on my current medication for a couple months now and I feel much better—most of the time. I try to keep myself in check by taking time for me through writing and blogging on a daily basis. I also have a supportive boyfriend that I tell when I’m having good and bad days. By telling him about my ups and downs I am putting words to my experiences that, for the longest time, had been kept in secret.

Days become much more difficult about two weeks before “that” time of the month when my hormones go seriously awry. I do take b.c. to try and keep everything in check, but sometimes I still feel the effects of my cycle.

For example, this morning I woke up feeling very depressed and irritated even though nothing was out of place. I woke early to write and I couldn’t focus and my emotions were all over the place. I knew that it wasn’t a choice to feel that way and I knew I needed some time to myself to get sorted out again. I told my boyfriend about those thoughts and feelings and he was very supportive of my needs. He helped me get set up in the spare bedroom and came and checked on me off and on all afternoon.

Recently I came across an article called “Ten Things You Should Never Say to a Depressed Person” on Words and Quotes website. Reading through it, the article was spot on about phrases some may use when told that someone they know is suffering from depression. It can be difficult to know what to say or how to help a friend who is struggling.

If you are interested in reading the article, let me know your thoughts and reactions. Do you agree with the list? Would you add anything else?

  1. Okay, color me stupid, but i couldn’t find the ten things, just a quote and an animation.

Anyway, thanks so much for your two comments on my poems; they were much appreciated!

      1. That worked! Oh dear me, those *are* terrible things to say. I always wondered, in particular, how someone else being worse off was supposed to be helpful. And things like “cheer up!” and “don’t let it bother you” are beyond teeth-grindingly maddening.

      2. Yup. Very difficult to find people who know how to act around someone who suffers from depression. I can’t speak for any other mental health disorders, so I speak about my experiences
