Morning Ritual: A Snapshot

It’s 6:04 on a Thursday morning, the last day of school for my district.
Like clockwork me and Spazzer, the marmalade cat are
Performing our morning ablations

I in lawn chair in a white robe with spotted menagerie
Of color
Shifting every other minute to keep the Internet signal
He at the screen door watching the bird feeder

The last of the ground coffee has become
Elixir for my Muse
Black, no cream or sugar
Medicine for my migraine

Air is warm and no one else is up
I have the mornings undisturbed
Heaven for my writerly soul

Marmalade wants outside to lounge
Stalk birds, squirrels but
It’s not in the cards
Time ticks slowly and then speeds forward
Car careening into the mist and humidity

My “office” is the back porch, the resting place
Of tools, crates, boxes, faded bored games
Miracle Grow and broken flat-screen
Desk is a cardboard box atop Styrofoam
An orange has materialized at the corner

I soak Van Morrison, birdsong and closed tiger-lilies
Into my gray and white matter
To use throughout the day

  1. Medicine for muse is certainly cat nature for i.. to smell fresh
garden air of Summer night’s heArt.. is play of flight
in furry pause way.. savoring present moments..
grasping claws soil in soul.. grains.. sand.. spilling
all around.. dust of me.. musing sparkles life..:)

  4. giggles Lovely. I want a cat like that. And the bored games made me smile. Are the games bored or are we bored of the games, I wonder?

  6. There’s heaven in Morning rituals, for sure. I like watching the bird feeder too, the forming of clouds, the re-righting of birds to skywires while preparing to jog in the morning. Thanks for sharing the poetic diaries of yours. I enjoyed it!

  9. Nice office. And Marmalade….I wonder if he is as mischievous as my marmalade and cream SamCat the Ripper! “bored games” – how quickly they become that. I do my work and writing at night when husband and cat are out of the way. This morning routine is wonderful.

    Love these too:

  12. Thanks for sharing your morning routine. Very nice. And what’s with cats wanting outside? They should just be happy inside where they are safe, and the birds are safe. Peace, Linda

I loved your view on coffee.. in this exquisite poem of yours 🙂 It can most definitely be our greatest muse.. and a quick remedy for a migraine as well.. 🙂

    Beautifully penned 😀

  15. I read a lot of poetry in the morning.. often with my iPad in the morning.. a great way to enjoy what people have written during the night.. I like how your pictured the morning with you and the cat.

  16. I used to be a night owl. Now my routine has changed a bit and I can actually be quite efficient in the morning too. “Black, no cream or sugar / Medicine for my migraine” – yes, black always! And a very efficient way of keeping migraines at bay.

  17. Nice. I am a black coffee kinda guy myself. I learned to drink coffee working the loading docks early in the mornings as I paid my way through school. Van Morrion is not a bad one to write to either. I have it in the mix. My mix is quite ecclectic though. If I can get the time I write early in th morning, but late at night has been my more ritual time the last couple years, after everyone is asleep.

    1. 🙂 Very cool. During the school year I work really early in the morning so it’s easier just to write while the tigerlilies are still asleep and my inner editor is still comatose.

  18. Ah, I can picture your details…
The routines… that seemingly never change.
And the porch…I’m working on cleaning mine up. But then I’m usually the only one home during the summer… I only know the school schedule from those who need to know…(been there done that).

Best to finding that time to breathe and of course write 🙂
    Cheers, Jules
