Early morning coffee
wrapped in cerulean blanket
campfire slowly waking up
The cave whispers to all of us
Heat slowly creeps up the mountainside
Weatherman calls for rain
We pack ponchos next to lamps and gloves
Waterproof zipped suits, our formal dress
Headlamps circle ancient helmets
My daughter packs tiny juiceboxes and home-made sandwich
Picnic under traditional black out
Afternoon heat fades
we slide into her man-sized mouth
She tucks a Mertensia virginica into my helmet strap
Are you ready? I whisper
Smiling, we climb into the darkness

Great response to the prompt. It’s great that your daughter is so involved in the adventure. I’ve been reading my way down to this. You are an exceptional poet. Your words are brilliant.

I love the detail of the preparations — and then the culmination, poised on the brink, embracing the adventure to come. 🙂
