The Buck Stops Where?

In response to Mindlovemisery’s Photo Challenge #49:

“The Buck Stops Where?”

I watched a short film just yesterday

informing me that bananas are berries on a tree

Cheap fruit thanks to past American history

Creation of United Fruit Company

At first glance, provided “most perfect fruit”

for baby’s first food and potassium in a yellow suit

“Day-o” and enormous spiders sprang into my head

Basking in banana leaves for a fragrant bed

Neither mention of bloodshed or murder to be discovered

in history books or famous clothing lines uncovered

Nor truth revealed about the Banana Massacre

five hundred strikers dead and what for?

A nation’s  convenience satiated by anonymous blood spilled

Lives lost to bring those who can pay the next techno “thrill”

All blaming the other for the latest slanderous affair

But folks, the buck stops WHERE?

Another dark and beautiful poem about the Banana Massacre was written by Pablo Neruda, entitled “United Fruit Company

  1. I liked your interpretation of ‘blood money’. So very done and a clever exploration of responsibility.

    1. Thank you. I was so shocked to hear about something I’ve always taken for granted–then my mind wandered to consider what else I don’t know about the objects I use every day

  2. Oh, to take responsibility for anything, especially actions that benefit few at the cost of many…

Thanks for stopping by my MLM piece.

I see you also wrote for Wikems… 🙂 Me too.
    Continue writing 🙂 Cheers, Jules
